PTA Vacancies for 2019-20

The Olney Elementary School PTA counts on parent volunteers to help make our programs and events a success. If you are interested in filling any of the vacant PTA positions listed below or want to learn about other ways to get involved, please contact PTA President Paul Carlson at olneyespresident@gmail.com.

COMMUNITY BUILDING

Chess Club Mentor
This OES club needs a sociable co-leader with good kid skills to help organize players into groups and help set up the season ending tournament.  The Chess Club meets one day a week after school usually Fridays in December through March.  Minimal knowledge of the game is fine.  A club leader is already in place and this is an auxiliary role to come Friday afternoons 3:30-5:15pm through the season, but every session is not mandatory.

Community Athletic Game
Coordinate our 3rd annual kickball game for staff and parents, scheduled to take place after school one day in Spring 2020.

Diversity Committee
Our families and students have many different talents, backgrounds, opportunities and challenges. Write monthly newsletter submissions and/or create bulletin board displays to recognize the diversity of our community.  Help coordinate Cultural Heritage Night or similar event.  Additionally, help ensure that all families feel welcome to participate in PTA meetings and events.

End of Year Social
Coordinate a fun social event for OES families and staff to celebrate the end of another successful school year!

Spring Dance Committee
Help our coordinator with planning, decorations, staff raffle and more for one of the events OES students look forward to most each year!

SCHOOL SUPPORT

5th Grade Memories Committee
Fifth grade parents are needed to coordinate the end of year activities for the OES Class of 2020.  The signup for 5th Grade Memories committee will be available at Back to School Night (September).

Grant Writing
Research opportunities for grants to help support our school.  Submit proposals as needed.

Kids Heart Challenge/Field Day
Assist Ms. Morse with Kids Heart Challenge and Field Day events.

FUNDRAISING

Fundraiser Committee
Help plan and carry out the PTA’s biggest fundraiser of the year.  Numerous positions available including sponsorships, student incentives, marketing and more.  This event has been a fun run in recent years.

Grocery Programs
Manage OES PTA account for Harris Teeter’s Together in Education program.  Assist parents in registering at beginning of each school year and inform community of bonus opportunities.

Spirit Wear
Work begins over the summer in order to have spirit wear available at the beginning of the school year.  Work with vendor to create/design and order Olney ES Spirit Wear items such as t-shirts, magnets, etc.  Decide marketing strategy for upcoming year (order in bulk, etc.).  Manage ordering, distribution and sales at school events.

Yearbook
Work with yearbook company to create the school yearbook, help take photographs, collect photographs from parents and classroom teachers, coordinate yearbook sales as well as other tasks.  Distribute yearbooks to teachers for distribution at end of school year.  Most of the work may be done at home on a personal computer.

Get Involved!

volunteerYou Can Make A Difference:
Get Involved in the Olney Elementary PTA

It feels great to participate! Your child spends a lot of time at school, and it’s great to share some of their school-related experiences. While volunteering your time, you’ll also see your efforts pay off in smiles of your children and their friends.

Volunteering makes a big difference. From fundraising to programming, the PTA is a vital part of the school community and your involvement can have a lasting, positive impact on students.

It’s a terrific way to get to know other parents. Add some new friends with a shared interest to your circle and help foster connections between families in your community.

Your help is always welcome. Whether you’re participating on a committee, helping to run an event or providing support in the classroom, there are always ways to pitch in.

You can put your talents to good use. There are many ways to contribute, some of which are sure to complement your strengths, interests or professional skills.

Have a great idea? Volunteering gives you opportunities to get your ideas out there.

Volunteering provides another way to get to know teachers and school staff. Involvement in the PTA can help you better understand the staff’s needs and ideas. And it’s a great way to keep up-to-date on school issues.

Important Back to School Information from your PTA

Greetings OES Families!

The new Board and I hope you have been having a wonderful summer.  It’s hard to believe that our kids will be headed back to school in just a few weeks.  The PTA has been working hard over the summer to make this upcoming school year a great one!  Below is some important back to school information for you.

1.  Stay informed: We are currently researching options to determine the best way to communicate with our OES families.  In the meantime, please check our website or Facebook page to find out what’s happening.  You do not need to have a Facebook account to view the page.

2.  Welcome our Staff: The PTA will be hosting a breakfast for our amazing OES staff on Wednesday, August 23.  Please help us let them know how much we appreciate them by signing up to provide items for the breakfast.  Click here to help!

3.   Help us Kick-off the School Year:
The PTA will be hosting a New Family Night on Thursday, August 31 from 6:30-8 pm.  This is a good opportunity for families new to the school to meet some of our staff and learn more about OES.  Tours of the school and snacks will also be available.  We are looking for a few friendly OES graduates to give tours.  If you have a well-spoken, friendly, positive child interested in this SSL opportunity, please email jessicalchappell@hotmail.com.

The school will be having an Open House on Friday, September 1 from 9:15 – 10:15 am.  Once you’ve had an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher, please stop by the school playground for a snack, to renew friendships and meet new friends.  The PTA will also have bins set out to collect any extra school supplies that you wish to donate to the school/staff.

You’ll also want to mark your calendars now for our first PTA meeting of the year on Thursday, September 7 as well as an Ice Cream Social to be held on Wednesday, September 13.  Both events are from 7 – 8 pm.  Additional details will be sent later this month.

4.  Support Olney Elementary PTA:
Register your Harris Teeter VIC card and every time you shop, a percentage of your purchases will be donated to Olney Elementary PTATo register, sign up at the customer service desk or click here – use OES Group #1030.  You must re-register ever year.  You can have up to 5 schools linked to your VIC card at one time.  Last year, we had just over 40 families registered.  This year, our goal is to at least double that!  Please share with family, friends and neighbors.

Raise money for Olney Elementary School PTA by shopping at AmazonSmile. We will receive 0.5% of eligible purchases when you use this special link. There are no price increases or fees for shoppers or Olney Elementary School PTA. Start shopping!

5.  Volunteer:  We still need a few more parents willing to dedicate some of their time and talents to make OES a great place for our kids to learn and grow. If you think you can do a little more this year, please reach out and I’ll help you find a role that fits your interests and schedule.

6. Thank you, American Plant: For the third year, American Plant of Bethesda has generously donated mulch and landscape workers to spruce up the school before the first day.  A big thank you to both American Plant and our school beautification committee for helping to make our school look great.

If you have any questions or want to learn how you can get involved with the PTA, please contact me at olneyespresident@gmail.com.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Mariah Payne
