2014 Maryland Green School Announcement!

Olney Elementary has achieved certification as a 2014 Maryland Green School. This is a significant accomplishment, representing a whole school commitment to environmental literacy for staff, students and the community. The Maryland Green School Program is nationally recognized program begun in 1999. Today there are over 450 Green Schools certified in Maryland. Olney Elementary has succeeded in using a holistic, integrated approach to incorporate local environmental issue investigation with environmental best management practices and community stewardship. Our school community has acted to empower students to practically apply knowledge at school, home and in their communities to reduce pollution, decrease waste, increase habitat, and create healthy learning and living environments. We would like to thank Mr. Sean Barnes who helped create the web-based application for the Green School Application.

We are very excited to share that this year Olney Elementary participated in the Trex Plastic Film Recycling Challenge. Our students learned about proper plastic film and bag recycling by collecting items such as grocery bags, bread bags, bags, Ziploc and other re-closable bags etc. It has been a very successful challenge as the winner for Montgomery County was Olney Elementary. We collected a total of 3,570 lbs, which is 6 lbs of plastic per student. Olney ES won by such a high margin over every other school in Montgomery County because every student, teacher and parent was behind the effort. Our school community is dedicated to educating our students about sustainability and environment stewardship along with natural resource conservation.  ***This will be the last printed edition! The newsletter is posted on our OLNEY ES website- Gone GREEN!
